Purina Ingredients

What We Think

Although “chicken” is listed as the first ingredient in the Purina product, and presumably is fresh chicken or the term “meal” should be used, it is only included at 14%. Fresh chicken contains approximately 65-75% water therefore, the equivalent amount of nutritionally significant dry matter is only approximately 4.2%. Meat, being the most nutritionally suitable protein source for dogs, is an important constituent, and hence is why it is the number one ingredient in the Formula K recipe as meal, which has only 6% water content.

In Formula K chicken meal is the number 1 ingredient. It is of the highest quality available, and is an excellent source of protein.

The Purina recipe contains wheat, and hence wheat gluten, which is the main cause of nutritionally related allergies in dogs. Obese dogs are also often burdened with impaired immune systems, and so are prone to dietary sensitivities to a number of ingredients. Wheat is also a major cause of these sensitivities. The Formula K recipe is free from wheat and wheat gluten.
Whilst hydrolysed poultry meal and carrots are good sources of fibre, vitamins and protein, they are so far down the list of ingredients that their benefit is negligible. With Formula K all ingredients are included for a specific purpose and not merely at low levels for a marketing claims.
The generic term “animal fat” allows the manufacturer to amend the type of fat according to availability, price, etc. However, a number of animal fats are very saturated, e.g. tallow and lard, and would not be suitable for a dog with a weight problem, as this would promote fat lay-down and circulatory issues. The purchaser cannot make an informed choice from this declaration. Refined chicken oil and fish oil are the main sources of fat. They are highly digestible, declared openly for consumer information, and provide very high levels of omega-3 oils.
