Who owns what?

The table below shows you who owns your favourite dog food.

You think those specialist brands are independent? Think again. Most dog food in the UK is made either by Mars, Colgate Palmolive or Nestle. They even own apparently independent brands like James Wellbeloved and Royal Canin (though you'd search their websites in vain for any information about that).

The exceptions include Applaws, Burns, Butchers, HiLife, Nature's Diet, Nature's Menu, Pascoe's, and of course Formula K!

Being owned by a multinational snack bar company isn't necessarily a bad thing. These guys didn't get where they are today by being slouches.

People in the pet trade tend to prefer the independent brands, believing them to be of better quality and of high integrity. The pet trade aren't completely unbiased, because they know you can buy the multinational brands in supermarkets - whereas the independent brands are often found only in specialist stores.

The best solution is to learn about ingredients and understand the label. Use the information on our pages to educate yourself about what goes into your dog's food.
