Do You Have An Overweight Dog?

Many of us today have overweight dogs. It’s a common condition among dogs in Britain these days. One study estimates that as many as one-fourth, or two million British dogs are overweight or obese. How does this happen? How do perfectly lovely, healthy dogs become overweight?

Most dogs become overweight because their owners are feeding them too much. They may not measure how much they feed or leave food down at all times. They may give their dog more food whenever their dog gives them “the look” that says “I’m hungry. Feed me.”

Adding tablescraps to your dog’s food can also lead to your dog becoming overweight. Too many treats also add extra calories to your dog’s diet. And, many dogs don’t get enough exercise which can lead to an overweight dog.

Some dogs are more prone to being overweight than others. Labradors and Beagles, for instance, are notorious for packing on the pounds. However, overweight dogs come in all sizes. From Chihuahuas to Great Danes, any dog can become overweight. No dog is immune from becoming overweight if he gets too many calories and too little exercise.

Overweight dogs are much more likely to suffer from a number of health problems such as joint and ligament problems, heart disease, decreased stamina, decreased liver function, increased risk during surgery and when taking anesthesia, digestive problems (including flatulence), immune system problems, skin and coat problems, increased risk of cancer, and diabetes mellitus. Overweight dogs may lead shorter lives than dogs who are kept at a healthier weight.

If your dog is overweight, here are some steps you can take to help him slim down to a healthier weight:

Control your dog’s portion sizes. Don’t allow your dog to gorge himself and sleep his life away.

Measure how much you're feeding your dog. Whether you feed kibble or tinned food, measure the amount and know how much you are feeding your dog. It’s even possible to count calories for your dog.

Follow the suggested serving size given by the food you are feeding. This is only a recommendation but it gives you a starting point if you have an overweight dog. Watch your dog’s condition carefully to see if you need to adjust the serving size upward or downward.

Consider buying a low fat dog food, such as Formula K, to help your dog slim down. A good low fat dog food will provide a diet that’s high in protein to help maintain muscle, low in fat to keep calorie intake low, and high in fibre to give pets a full, satisfied feeling without adding unnecessary calories.

Cut down on treats, especially if you feed a lot of treats that are high in sugar and salt.

Cut out table scraps. They may not harm your dog but their added calories will keep your dog overweight.

Increase your dog’s exercise. If your dog is out of shape you should start out slow. Take short, easy walks at first. You can gradually build up to moderate and longer walks. As your dog loses weight and begins to be more active you can increase his exercise.

Overweight dogs are quite common in our society now but, luckily, there are many things you can do to help your dog become slimmer and healthier. Help your dog lose just a few pounds and he will live a longer, healthier life.
