Hills Ingredients

What We Think

Maize is the primary ingredient. Maize is a particularly high GI carbohydrate and hence will be converted very rapidly to glucose in the body once digested. This has 2 effects:
  • Insulin cause the excess glucose to be converted to fat, perpetuating the weight problem
  • This “spike” in insulin causes the body to become less sensitive to the hormone, and hence can lead to type-II diabetes

With Formula K all grains have been selected for their low GI levels, and are included at minimal levels.

The main principle of this diet is that it contains an exceptionally high level of indigestible fibre, and hence a low calorie content. Whilst very high levels of fibre by-products, such as peanut shells (hulls) can produce very inexpensive recipes, they can lead to gut compaction, bloating and lethargy. Also, a number of essential nutrients, such as omega-3 oils and minerals, can become bound up in the fibres, and hence are unavailable for absorption from the gut. Certainly fibre has a part to play in weight reduction. However, this is a very extreme way of reducing calorie intact, and we would expect the food to be quite unpalatable.

Hills Prescription Diet r/d has only 306 calories per 100 grams. This is one of the lowest calorie foods available, and has probably been acheived due to the high fibre content of the diet.
In Formula K, a variety of indigestible, partially digestible, and fully digestible fibres have been added from oats, brown rice, barley, beet pulp, soya hulls and cellulose. This provides the benefits of low calories, control of bowel motions, and a source of energy for the intestinal flora, without the gut compaction risks and lethargy associated with excessive levels of indigestible fibre. The cost of the ingredients has not been the main focus with this recipe.
Linseed is the only ingredient rich in omega-3 oils. However, it is only listed 15 th, and below salt. It is unlikely that the salt content will be above 1% therefore, the linseed content will be no greater, and hence the omega-3 contribution is negligible. Omega-3 oils are very important for cardiac and circulatory health and my expectation is that this diet will have a very low content.

The optimal dietary ratio for Omega 6 and 3 is between 5:1 and 10:1. In Hills Prescription Diet r/d the ratio is 54:1, which is probably due to the prevalence of vegetable oils in this recipe. A low ratio of Omega 6:3 fatty acids is thought to promote health benefits including reductions in heart and circulatory disease, inflammation, joint degradation, tumour growth, skin complaints.
The Formula K recipe contains 1% fish oil, which is an excellent source of the omega-3 oils DHA & EPA. Whilst it is expensive, it is commonly acknowledged as being the best source of these nutrients

The Formula K recipe has the lowest Omega 6:3 ratio at 13:1. This makes it the best dog food for its use of Omega 3 and 6.
