Is a dog diet a good idea?

With so many dogs in the UK estimated to be overweight today, weight loss for dogs is an important issue. Is a dog diet a good idea? Does your dog need to be on a diet?

For dogs who are overweight or obese, a weight loss diet can be very beneficial. However, it’s very important to help your dog lose weight the right way.

If your dog is only slightly overweight you may be able to help him reduce by controlling his portion size a little more carefully. Cut out fattening treats and tablescraps. Give your dog healthy snacks instead, such as veggies. You can also try increasing the amount of exercise your dog gets. Increase your walks with your dog or try some training exercises. These are both excellent ways of getting your dog more active.

On the other hand, if your dog is definitely overweight, a dog diet may be the way to go. There are a number of low fat dog foods being sold commercially but they are not all created equally. A good diet dog food, such as Formula K, will be low in fat and high in protein. It should also be relatively low in carbohydrates compared with ordinary dog foods. A dog diet that is low in fat will provide reduced calories for your dog and help him lose weight. Higher protein encourages lean muscle growth. A higher fibre content will keep your dog feeling full and satisfied without eating extra calories.

You should also consider the ingredients in your dog’s diet. Look for foods that provide quality, named ingredients. Avoid foods which use generic terms such as “grains” instead of identifying what kind of grain is used. The type of grain used can make a big difference. Corn, for instance, is hard for dogs to digest and can be used as a cheaper source of protein in dog foods. This is a cheap source of calories and it doesn’t provide your dog with good nutrition.

Any good dog diet should help your dog lose weight gradually. Your dog should lose weight slowly. Remember that with most dogs even a small loss of weight is a significant achievement since they weigh much less than humans. A dog can safely lose between .5 and 2 percent of his body weight per week. This is usually just a few ounces for a dog so you may not notice much difference but if you continue at this rate your dog will reduce his weight.

Weigh your dog weekly so you can keep an accurate record of his weight.

Keep in mind that an excessively strict diet for your dog can be dangerous. Don’t try to make your dog lose weight too fast. You don’t have to cut out all of his treats either. Popcorn, carrots, apple slices and other healthy veggies all make good, non-fattening treats for your dog. However, do keep to your dog’s diet. Feed him the proper portion size and watch his condition so you can adjust it as necessary.

It may be hard to stick to your dog’s diet at first but you and your dog can make it work. It’s very much like being on a diet yourself. There is a certain amount of willpower involved in resisting your dog when he pleads with you for more food and treats. Try to remember that you are helping him reduce his weight for his own good. He will be healthier and live longer if you help him lose weight.
